Deal is widely cited as one of the most successfully independent high streets in Kent. The town famously has no chain coffee shops — every coffee shop in Deal is independently owned — and a strong community consensus around keeping the centre independent has held for decades. The medieval town layout, a grid of narrow streets running back from the seafront, makes for an excellent environment for independent shopping. Locally sourced restaurants, women-owned businesses, and family-run shops are the norm here rather than the exception, and Deal's independents tend to be long-established and deeply embedded in the community.
